Start with the paragraph.
- Open your PDF and choose Edit text.
- Select a line, then choose Edit surrounding paragraph. Pagekind checks the surrounding lines and outlines the supported text block.
- Type directly in the page or use the synchronized Paragraph draft field. Changes apply after a short pause.
Uniform horizontal paragraphs can be left aligned, centered or right aligned. A scan is a picture: recognizing its text makes it searchable, but does not make the scan’s visible letters editable.
Choose how the lines sit.
Paragraph alignment offers Left, Center and Right. The typing preview follows your choice immediately. Pagekind reflows the applied PDF using the original font and verifies its saved appearance.
Use Tighter lines or Looser lines to adjust the space between lines. For an exact value, enter Line spacing (points). This is the distance between successive baselines; the available range appears below the controls.
Reset alignment and spacing returns to the layout captured when this paragraph was first selected. The first line stays at its original vertical position while the lower edge adjusts.
Give the words more room.
Open Text box size and capacity when you need to change the paragraph frame. Adjust Text box width (points), or choose More room / Less room, to move the right edge. Adjust Available lines, or use Add a line / Fewer lines, to move the lower edge. You can use 2 to 60 lines where the page has enough clear space. Close this section to return to the shorter set of paragraph controls; the values and your draft stay in place.
Width, alignment, spacing and line capacity work together. Pagekind checks page edges, nearby text, graphics and annotations before applying the result. It preserves supported original character spacing and word gaps.
Keep a draft that needs attention.
If the words do not fit, a spacing value is outside the supported range, or the font cannot preserve a character, the draft stays editable with an explanation. Correct the value, shorten the text or adjust the frame. Navigation waits until the draft is applied or discarded.
Undo first clears an unapplied draft. After that, Undo and Redo move through applied PDF changes. You can continue typing while a change is being processed; if its reply is interrupted, Pagekind checks the saved result before accepting the next revision.
If a supported paragraph is refused because of leading spaces, Remove leading spaces offers an explicit correction. It changes the indentation. Restore previous draft brings back that refused text while the correction is current; use Undo for changes already applied to the PDF. The unapplied draft and restore action do not survive an app restart.
Finish and save a copy.
The text box is a typing preview. Choose Done editing to inspect the exact PDF typography, line breaks and nearby content. Save a new copy when it looks right. Applied layout stays with the working document and its Undo history; saved centered and right-aligned paragraphs can be selected again.
When text selection detects signature, certification or timestamp structures, it shows a read-only explanation before typing. Use an unsigned original for text changes. This check does not authenticate a signer or validate a certificate.
A protected PDF?
Supported text and paragraphs remain editable when your PDF permissions allow it. Changes keep the original passwords and permissions. If reading access restricts editing, choose Enter owner password in the text tool. Signed structures and unsupported security settings stay read-only, with an explanation before a draft starts. Know the supported range.
Pagekind 0.65.0 is an engineering preview. Paragraph editing supports uniform horizontal text, up to 5,000 characters in the Windows-1252 repertoire, with regular spacing from 1.05 to 3 times the font size. Existing embedded fonts may cover fewer characters.
Mixed styles, complex-script shaping, justified text, automatic lists and hanging indents, semantic paragraph recognition, and text flowing across separate boxes or pages remain outside this workflow. If a source layout cannot be reconstructed exactly, use supported line editing or revise the original document.
